OUR MISSION
TO INSPIRE AND HELP YOUNG PEOPLE GAIN UNDERSTANDING: OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS, VALUE MARKET DRIVEN ECONOMIES, DEVELOP ENTERPRENEURIAL AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS, AND UNDERSTAND THE RELEVANCE OF EDUCATION IN THE WORK PLACE AND THE IMPACT OF ECONOMICS ON THEIR FUTURE.

Project description

Junior Achievement is a program for the economic education of young people (from 7 – 30 years of age). This is a worldwide program and Macedonia, the 99th member of this international organization, joined 22.11.1996. There is a combination of theory and practice within all the courses, designed for different levels of students, providing necessary knowledge of market economy. In addition, as this program has worldwide acceptance, it will be very advantageous for the Macedonian youth to become part of this future international business community gaining the same knowledge, points of view, and models of doing business while using the same language (courses are run in English).

Democracy goals

The development of market economy conscience on behalf of the youth in Macedonia will be very helpful for further improving the democracy practice in Macedonia. In fact, this educational program provides progressive and multiple effects on building civil and open society. Besides, today’s students, in just a few years, will be the critical mass of future young business people who will be able to lead the country towards a market-oriented economy and a democratic society.

Long term plans

Our plans are to implement all the courses of JAI until 2006 with groups in Macedonian, Albanian, Turkish and Serbian languages. In the final phase of the implementation process we plan to establish 600 JAI groups (which means 50.000 future citizens will be educated in these programs). Having in mind simulation courses within the JA curricula, we make efforts to provide computer set for each school. Also, we are doing our best in opening so-called Cyber Clubs in other 20 cities in Macedonia (where JA courses are run), in order to provide space and background of contemporary joint student activities (including all Macedonian students – from the majority or minority ethnic groups).

Brief history

Junior Achievement Macedonia was started in February 1996 with one experimental group. In 1997/98, we established 50 JA groups within elementary and high schools in Skopje. During 1998/99, it was spread in 20 other towns in Macedonia (approximately 40 new groups), 5.000 students in total. Our best student companies are successfully competing in an international contest HPGBC sponsored by Hewlett-Packard (together with 1.000 student companies from the entire world) and Euro MESE . In order to provide cultural and friendship connections between our youth and the youth throughout the world, we established an International summer school (featuring computer simulation courses and different cultural-entertainment-sports activities). It takes place during one summer month in Macedonia. All established JA groups in Skopje are already provided with one computer set and one computer classroom for the youth from the town, so called JA Cyber Club.

Junior Achievement of Macedonia was registered as an independent non-governmental association, developed by, but working independently from the Open Society Institute - Macedonia since April 15 ,1997. Main funding till now has been provided by foreign donors in grants or in-kind contributions (Foundation Open Society Institute-Macedonia, European Agency for Reconstruction, U.S Embassy Office for Public Affairs, Macedonian Enterprise Development Foundation, Swiss Embassy, World Bank, Peace Corps Macedonia, American High School Nova in Skopje, Fersped Skopje, Municipalities in Veles and Bitola).
