JA Macedonia - Facts and Figures
Our long-term goal is to create a critical mass
of youths who will be prepared to make real changes in the country and
lead Macedonia to a more democratic society in the future.
Our short-term goal is to sequentially implement 11 courses in the
elementary schools and 4 courses in high schools. Junior Achievement
Macedonia plays a very important role in the Macedonian educational system
as it helps students to understand the functions of a market economy and
increase the inter-ethnic dialogue through economic education and
cooperation among young people regardless of their ethnic origin (Roma,
Turks, Vlachs, Serbs, Albanians, Macedonians, and others).
The educational system in the Republic of Macedonia is still in
need of reforms that can introduce multicultural and intercultural
learning programs among the young. The education of ethnic students is of
utmost importance as a fulfillment of the needs of ethnic minorities. An
effective policy for equity and equal opportunity must be recognized by
the government. Development of programs that will deal with all of the
above issues must be supported at the national level and would ideally be
carried out through local NGOs. Integration of targeted program such as
Junior Achievement in the national education system would aid in this
effort.
JA Programs were taught in the mother-tongue of the students in
combination with business English. All of the educational materials for
the students and teachers were translated into Macedonian, as well as
Albanian, Turkish and Serbo-Croatian. At the moment, the scope of the JA
programs is: 128 groups or 75% of students are taught in Macedonian, 30
groups or 17% students are taught in Albanian, 8 groups or 6% in Turkish 1
group or 1% in Serbo-Croatian and 1 group or 1% consisted of Roma
students.
Junior Achievement Macedonia provides training for the teachers, textbooks
and study guides for participating students as well as computers for the
schools involved with the program.

Priorities of JA program for the rest of the year
We continue in our efforts to have the JA program
included in the regular national curriculum. Furthermore, our priority is
to increase the number of students that attend the JA programs as well as
the number of trained teachers that run the program in the schools.
Efforts were made to expand the program working area in 15 municipalities
in Skopje and throughout Macedonia. One of our priorities is to build a
foundation for future sustainability by raising funds for our normal
operational expenses from the local business community.
