Enterprise in Action

The program helps students understand the principal characteristics of economic system and the role of business in it. The activities are designed to reinforce economic concepts taught in nation history, state history, and civic courses. Students learn the steps in organizing a business and producing and marketing a product. They also study the social responsibilities of business and the role of government in economy

Objectives

  • Students identify goods and services they want or buy often and discuss how business affect lives

  • Students candy producers and consumers interact in a competitive environment to learn key features of our economic systems

  • Students learn about the resources required to operate a cookie business. They also develop a simple business plan

  • Students estimate the cost of operating a hamburger stand and discover that profit margins frequently are small

  • Students learn about an entrepreneur who becomes a sole proprietor, takes on a partner, and eventually organizes a corporation

  • Students conduct experiments to determine the most efficient way to produce high quality paper hats

  • Students study the marketing function

  • Students learn how business expenses become income for others

  • Students discuss ethical and economical problems businesses commonly face

  • Students identify the types of goods and services commonly provided by government

  • Students measure the health of the economy using current statistics to describe economic trends

Methodology

A combination of traditional theory with practical hands-on activities supported by software programs and the presence of a volunteer business consultant. Activities include: discussions, games, video projection, creative activities, tests, questionnaires, team work, role plays.
