Our City

An examination of career opportunities and the interdependence of businesses in a city. The program identifies businesses that can be found in a typical city and the types of workers they require. The students learn how workers apply their skills to their jobs and how their jobs make a difference in the city.

  • Understand the decisions that have to be made in order to start a restaurant

  • Recognize the connection between producers and consumers

  • Understand the importance of the newspaper as a communications tool

  • Recognize the skills a reporter needs

  • Identify jobs within the newspaper business

  • Understand that one purpose of a bank is to keep money

  • Complete a simple bank transaction

Methodology

A combination of traditional theory with practical hands-on activities supported by software programs and the presence of a volunteer business consultant. Activities include: discussions, games, video projection, creative activities, tests, questionnaires, team work, role plays.
