International Summer camp

So far JA Macedonia has organized five International Summer Camps on the beautiful Prespa and Ohrid Lake. These camps were attended by 120 students out of which 40 came from foreign countries, such as Australia, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Bulgaria, Albania, Hungary and Serbia and Montenegro.

During the camp students had the opportunity to play MESE (Management and Economic Simulation Exercises). The classes were conducted in English. The advanced students who had already acquired knowledge of MESE had the opportunity to participate in a simulation known as "Banks in Action".

Leisure activities included ping-pong, basketball, volleyball, rugby, kayaking, swimming, backgammon and the final night bonfire, which included barbecue and Macedonian folk dancing. The highlight of the leisure activities was a day trip to Ohrid where students were able to learn about Macedonian history and culture in addition to seeing Lake Ohrid, the biggest lake in Macedonia.

Overall the camps enabled the students to make new friendships which are set to continue in the future. As a consequence of these friendships as the world gets smaller in the future these friendships could transpire into future business relations. [details]

Job Shadow Day

The mission of Job Shadow Day Program is an initiative for engaging students in the world of work.
Our goal: To provide over 1.000 school-aged each year with Job Shadow experience.
Job Shadow Day is composed of several components built around a half- day visit to a job site in the private, nonprofit or government sector. Each student should have the opportunity to tour a job site, "shadow", an employee for one day and participate in some workplace activities.

Job Shadow Day:

  • Demonstrates the connection between academics and careers, exciting students to learn by making their classwork more relevant.

  • Builds community partnerships between schools and business that enhance the educational experience of all students.

  • Introduces students to the requirement of professions and industries to help them prepare to join the workforce of the 21st century.

  • Encourage an ongoing relationship between young people and caring adults.

Basically, "Job Shadow Day" program consists of:

  • One hundred students as partners of professionals for one day (100 students is an optimal number for the first experience). The ages recommended for job shadowing are 14 to 18 years old.

  • Students and professionals are invited to participate. Once they accept, the match between student-professional is made.

  • Each student receives a manual with instructions and a letter indicating his/her partner's personal information as well as the company/ organization where he/she works. One student = one professional is very important for creating a special bond between them.

  • The student shares the half-day with his partner so he gets a complete idea of daily routine

  • The student chooses the workplaces that interest him/her the most, and we look for that specific demand: the closer you get to the student's career interests, the better the experience results.

  • Each professional receives a manual with the program's objectives and suggestions including the student's resume.

  • The day begins with a breakfast for the students in a hotel. They receive the last recommendations and they go to their assigned workplace.

  • After a day of work, students and professionals return to the hotel for a cocktail. A video is shown and some participants (children and adults) share their experiences with the rest of the guests.

  • Duration of the project: 2 months preparation, lasts only one day.

Teacher training

JA programs are taught by teachers specially trained in training seminars. Each teacher takes part in training where she/he learns about the JA teaching methods and activities that help students better understand the subject. The length of training is different for each course. The primary school training does not require more than one day for each course, while the one for secondary schools is three days long and takes place outside of Skopje. Upon completion of the training, teachers receive all teaching materials for free provided by JA Macedonia.
JA Macedonia held four seminars in year 2004; training over 350 teachers throughout Macedonia in JA’s various programs. [details]
